Airdrop: Wonderful World of Libraries!

Today’s AirDrop is from our esteemed associate, Ms. Amanda Maystead. Famous for keeping track of our client files, and all things Carol-and-Client related. She’s a brilliant mind and is steadfast in keeping our files tight and information flowing, which is in constant flux and change. Plus she has to keep up with me and everyone else. That said, I hope you enjoy.

Whether a library is in your home or part of your municipality, it can be a place of solace and refuge (as indicated by the above built-in library – one of several – in a home purchased by one of our special clients; since then, she has gloriously refurbished the bookcases).

When I was younger, my mother showed me that libraries are a place of wonder to explore new ideas and to travel without leaving your seat. We visited a local branch of our public library once a week from the time I was a baby until I went off to college (where I immediately obtained a job at the school library – I love libraries!). In fact, whenever I vacation, I find a local library and check it out.

Last Friday, KTVU featured an article about skyrocketing online access to libraries. And no wonder: our Bay Area libraries are world-class and suitable for all ages from the very young to the young-at-heart! Bonus: several have fascinating architectural pedigrees, including Burlingame Library (Robin Chiang & Co.) and Marin County Civic Center Library (Frank Lloyd Wright).

Today, libraries offer even more than they did when I was younger. Which means they provide even more solace and refuge during complicated times. In the sections of this newsletter, we’ll give you the connections to your county’s libraries and what services are currently on offer.

San Francisco County

San Francisco Public Libraries are at the forefront of online access. Within a week of Shelter-in-Place they organized e-cards for digital use of available items and services. You may look up books, check out eBooks and audiobooks, view movies, browse their extensive collection of historical photos of San Francisco, listen to virtual story-time for kids, participate in book clubs, and much more!

San Mateo County

San Mateo County Libraries‘ website is your gateway to all things library on the Peninsula! All you need is an e-card to take advantage of the treasure-trove of media. Now offering text-help with research, as well as the availability of streaming music, audiobooks, eBooks, events, cultural tours, newspapers, magazines and even more. Take a look now and visit a branch near you in the future!

Santa Clara County

Santa Clara County Library District is a bustling hub of online activity for Silicon Valley. They, too, have set up an e-card application system to take advantage of the library’s services 24/7. Children can listen to any number of story-time events, learn crafts and more. Teens and adults have their pick of eBooks, audiobooks, blogs and all manner of digital content through user-friendly applications.

Alameda & Contra Costa Counties

Alameda County Library District has a great menu bar on their homepage for accessing digital content. The ACL also has oodles of tips for studying and research for teens and adults. Along with what you might expect are streaming movies, genealogy resources, and museum passes.

Oakland Public Library, of which there are many branches, has their own specific website and content. Apply for an e-card and the world of resources is at your fingertips! OPL offers bilingual story-time, book clubs, blogs with reading recommendations, civic resources, music, movies and more.

Contra Costa County Library has made their homepage an excellent resource for all things you may access via their digital collection. Here’s where you may apply for an e-card!

Marin County

Marin County Free Library definitely has what you might be looking for in terms of resources and entertainment. Your e-card grants you access to online services, including digital magazines, streaming music, language-learning and research on local history! MCFL also provides excellent curated lists of kid-friendly books, just in time for Children’s Book Week!
