A Realtor’s Guide to Landscaping with the Best Plants

Curb appeal is the unsung hero of real estate and it’s the first impression potential buyers get of your home, which can significantly impact a decision on whether or not to purchase the home. 
 
One way to enhance curb appeal is through thoughtful landscaping, and as a realtor, I’ve seen the power of plants firsthand. 
 
Today, I’m excited to share some expert insights into using specific plants to boost your property’s charm. We’ll focus on the following ten plants, each with its unique attributes.

Wisteria:

Wisteria is a climbing vine known for its stunning cascades of purple, blue, or white flowers.
 
Train it to climb a trellis or pergola near your entrance for an enchanting, welcoming effect.
Try and keep it off your home as no property inspector (or homeowner) is a fan of giving rodents and other pests easy access to the home’s framing.
 
Its lush blooms in both the spring and late summer will impress potential buyers with their beauty and fragrance.

Potato Vine:

This fast-growing, trailing vine is perfect for hanging baskets or as ground cover. Often drought resistant and the white or purple flowers are simple and inviting.
 
Place it along walkways, fences or near the front door to create a lush, inviting atmosphere.

Tree Mallow:

Tree Mallow is a drought-tolerant shrub with large, showy pink or lavender flowers.
 
It thrives in coastal areas and can provide a pop of color to your landscape.
 
Plant it in strategic spots to draw attention and create visual interest.

Fuchsias:

Bring forth the hummingbirds and pollinators as fuchsias are known for their unique, pendulous flowers that come in various shades.
 
Hanging baskets with trailing fuchsias look charming on porches and in entryways.
 
These vibrant blooms will catch the eye and leave a lasting impression. Fuchsias do well potted and in all of the vibrant colors, and they are a fast favorite.

Oregon Gumweed:

This native wildflower boasts yellow blooms and adapts well to dry climates.
 
Use it in your xeriscape (drought desert garden) garden to add a touch of native beauty to your property. I like it when it trails over sand and rocks – easy to grow and also drought resistant.

Hummingbird Sage:

As the name suggests, this perennial sage attracts hummingbirds with its scarlet flowers.
 
Place it in sunny spots to create a wildlife-friendly landscape.
 
Potential buyers will appreciate the ecological aspect of your garden and you may be lucky enough to catch it with a pollinating bumble or honeybee.

Spanish Lavender:

Lavender not only looks stunning but also exudes a soothing fragrance. There’s a difference between Spanish and French Lavender and did you know that there are over 40 varieties of lavender?
 
Plant it along pathways or in well-draining soil for a touch of elegance and pop of color.
 
Give it a little light touch and its aromatherapeutic qualities can make your home feel like a sanctuary.

Sage:

Sage is an excellent choice for low-maintenance landscaping.
 
Its gray-green foliage adds texture and contrast to your garden. Use it in drought-tolerant landscapes to save on water bills and with it’s silvery sheen it really pops.
 
Bonus – it’s something for the gourmet in all of us especially in fall cooking with poultry.

Hydrangea:

Hydrangeas come in various colors and add a touch of classic beauty. Depending on the acidity or alkaline of the soil can also predetermine the colors.
 
Plant them in shaded areas or containers for a lush, romantic vibe but I like the cuttings as the blooms can be long lasting in the perfect vase.

Trumpet Vines:

Trumpet vines produce vibrant, trumpet-shaped flowers that hummingbirds adore. And did you know that they are so easy to graft if you wanted to start a plant in another area of your garden?
Train them to climb fences or trellises for a dramatic and eye-catching effect. Their vivid colors and wildlife appeal can make your property memorable.

Kale:

While kale is typically associated with the vegetable garden, it can also be an unexpected addition to ornamental landscaping.
Its curly leaves add texture and a unique touch to your garden beds.
Consider using it as an edging plant or in containers for a quirky, modern twist. It’s a superfood so 3x the bonus on any kale plantings in your garden beds.

Landscaping with the right plants can significantly enhance your home’s curb appeal. By strategically incorporating these plants into your garden, you can create a lasting impression on potential buyers and make your property stand out in the real estate market.
